Georgy Sviridov on the Way to Alexander Blok
Georgy Sviridov on the Way to Alexander Blok
The second decade of our century became an important stage in the research of Georgy Sviridov’s less-studied early period. “Songs of the Wanderer” to words by Chinese poets (1942) and “Two Romances” to words by Boris Pasternak (1935) were released at this time into the musicological field as well as Five Romances to Words by Alexander Blok, which were supposed to be a part of Ten Romances composition conceived by Sviridov (1938). Blok’s poetry inspired the composer throughout the sixty years of his artistic career. Sviridov wrote more than eighty vocal works to Blok’s words, both separate and combined into cycles. Romances of 1938 are the young composer’s first turn to the poetry of Blok. The existence of these works was known, but they were not published for various reasons. They stylistically differ from all of Sviridov’s later works based on Blok’s poetry. The adherence to the principles of the late classical romance with its complex musical language and the equal importance of the vocal part and accompaniment is clearly heard in the Romances of 1938. At the same time, the interest in the song genre which dominates Sviridov’s later work can be already felt in this opus. This publication is the first research devoted to early romances to words by Blok.
